How this calculator works
The calculator multiplies the room length by its width to find the floor area in square metres, multiplies that by the price per square metre of your chosen flooring, and then adds a waste allowance for offcuts and mistakes. A 10% allowance suits simple rectangular rooms; diagonal layouts or busy patterns waste more and need a higher allowance.
Worked example
A 5 by 4 metre room is 20 square metres. At $25 per square metre that is $500, and adding a 10% waste allowance brings it to $550 for materials. Underlay, fittings, and labour would be on top of that figure.
Frequently asked questions
What waste allowance should I use?
Around 10% for straightforward rooms, rising to 15% or more for diagonal installs, herringbone patterns, or rooms with lots of alcoves and cuts.
Does this include fitting costs?
No. It estimates materials only. Underlay, adhesive or grippers, trims, and labour are additional and vary by flooring type.
How do I measure an irregular room?
Split it into rectangles, calculate each area separately, and add them together. Then apply the price and waste allowance to the combined total.
